Engadget finally announced the winners of their 2006 Engadget Awards an Apple walked away a winner indeed. Here are the categories Apple won in:
Desktop Of The Year - Mac Pro
Laptop Of The Year - Apple MacBook Pro
Portable Media Device Of The Year- Apple iPod shuffle 2g
Wearable Media Device Of The Year - Nike + iPod
Pretty impressive, if you ask me, but let’s not all act so surprised. I think we are all aware of Engadget’s Mac bias, but it was after all the readers who voted on those winners. And, let’s be honest. Who can blame them for being Mac-Biased?

I don’t care what engadget says, no iPod is the best. iPods suck, they’re completely the opposite of a Mac. They cost a lot and have very little features. If anything deserved the best portable media device, it should have been the iRiver Clix or Clix 2.
I have to agree with William, here, on some points, despite being a hard-core iPod user. The iPod lacks an FM radio feature that many other MP3 players have, and the battery life sucks without a third party battery upgrade (at least on my 1st G iPod Nano). Also, you can’t back up songs from your iPod with the default iTunes app (yes there are applications out there that have been developed for this purpose, but I’d rather have disk access as a feature right out of the box).
While I agree that the iPod does lack some common features, people tend to gravitate towards using an iPod because it’s not too bloated. I wouldn’t say it “sucks” completely. There are certain advantages to the iPod, as well; I love its sleek, slim size. Fits right into my pocket. The clickwheel was definitely the hook and sinker for me when I was purchasing my first iPod some time ago. I tried the button systems for other portable MP3 players, but the iPod was the only one that had an ergonomic feel to it.
As for Apple’s wins in other categories, I can’t really say whether it’s a well-deserved honor to have all those awards from both the readers and the editors of engadget. I haven’t had extensive experience with either the Macbook or Mac Pro; these devices are simply beyond my current budget. I’ve read reviews from many users regarding the Macbook and Mac Pro, however, and they’ve been mainly positive. I’ve also tried these products at the Apple Store, and they definitely seem well-designed from first-use. But then again, first impressions don’t always contain the truth.
BTW, the winner of the Portable Media device award was the Apple iPod shuffle (2g), not the Apple iPod Nano.
