Thumbs down
So I happily install iTunes 5 and find out the stupid installer removed QuickTime.:|
So after some fussing I dug out the last beta before iTunes 5 came bundled again. I'm saying that part now because it might have to do with this issue.
Anywhoo, I plopped in Multi Plugin and fired up iTunes. GUESS WHAT!? Stutter skip skip mayhem.:| OK, the subtitle of this reads that it didn't skip until 5 but I need to clarify that. When I put 4 in it skipped too. So I Googled it up and within ten minutes found out the WaveOut fix. I'd also increased the buffer to make sure it didn't skip anymore. Then it was smooth sailing.
Now 5 comes along and it's skipping again. No problem I figure, so I go into the QT controls and find a handy checkbox for a 'safe mode' which uses waveout instead. Problem solved? NO. It quit stuttering but now it just skips whenever I do anything that puts the tiniest strain on my comp.:|
I'm almost certain it's the buffer size. I CAN'T FIND WHERE TO SET IT! HELPP!!!! I Googled this too but only got stuff about 4.
So just WHERE is that buffer setting?? It's probably right under my nose.:\ I know, 'this forum doesn't provide support for third party apps' and yadayada, but I'm willing to chance random advice.:p It's not like I have to edit the registry to increase this thing. Or...is it?
It's probably just the stupid wrong QT version.
BTW, if anyone knows where to get a matching QT only installer I'd love to have it, because I tried to get it to reinstall with the bundle twice to no avail.
Thanks in advance.

(website locked out so I got to do it again, dang it!)

Open QuickTime, press the Edit tab > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences

In the drop down box > SoundOut and select the kHz you want and 16-bit sound, mono etc.
If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall the whole shabang.

Question are you using a konfabulator widget to control your volume? someone on the k site made a widget that mimics the mac and someone else is claiming that it causes iTunes to skip.

The only Konfab widget relating to iTunes is Yahtzee's iPod nano widget. And I know it isn't that because this thing skips even when it's off.
The only volume thing I have is the old 31-rc thing that emulates the bezel when you adjust the SYSTEM volume. It works well for me since I have a volume dial on my keyboard.
I did a restore point on my comp to pre-upgrade and ripped out the QT beta, then tried installing the works again. It installed fine then. Apple needs to get their Quicktime upgrading stuff straight. But anyway, long story short, it still skips anyway. I have no idea what to do since Apple decided to kindly remove buffer adjusting abilities.:| Or so it seems.
If anyone can tell me how to up the buffer PM me plz.
Oh wait, let me guess....you can adjust the buffer size...in the PRO version of QT!

QuickTime 7 doesn't work with Avid HD and Softimage Toonz! My entire earns come from those apps. I can't make my FX works without them!

I'm back to Winamp.

Thanks Ghosty, but if I needed to revert that far, I can easily just hit a restore point.
See, once in a rare while, Microsoft actually makes something that WORKS> Shocking, isn't it?:p
And if by chance that didn't revert it I have the old installer on a burned CD around here...somewhere...lol.
I just hope and pray Apple fixes this and quick, because I like 5. It moves a lot zippier on my comp and media key responses (thanks to that Multi Plugin restoring them!)are as good or better than WMP.
As for the one above me screaming QT7 terrors, if only I knew where to find an old QT6 installer standalone, you might be saved. Actually, that wouldn't be the worst idea for myself.
Wait. Now that I think of that, I just realized something. iTunes 4 worked smoothly after I fixed the skip issue initially, even AFTER I put in the QT7 beta, which doesn't have the buffer setting.
....Apple, move thine arse and fix this! And the QT7 incompatibilities too!
BTW, I even upgraded my 7 to Pro. Still no buffer setting. But I'm retrying iTunes now. Guess what. For some reason it isn't skipping. Either I'm not using Firefox (I am right now and I even scrolled like crazy to try to freak iTunes out but it didn't work!), some mysterious process was sucking iTunes of power, or Apple is playing a dirty trick on us by making us pay to enjoy our music properly.
Maybe it was a reboot? Nope, tried it after I rebooted and restored and reinstalled the stuff. I haven't rebooted it since, but I HAVE upgraded QT since.
Shame on you Apple. If you want more $$$ put your OS as available for regular biege boxes! That'll drain Microsoft dry and get them to make something OS worty.:|
EDIT-OK, it skipped a tiiiiiny bit just now and in tiiiiny bits ever so often but that's way better than it was and better than how WMP skips on my comp.:p
