Yes. PNG's are more expandable and more transparent, as of icons, but Icons only have a limited size.

it seems i'm unable to find the original adobe illustrator cs2, indesign cs2, after effects 7 pngs.

The one on the top's the original; the one on the bottom's one from my collection that looks good at 128 px x128px.
