Your best bet is to get hold of an app like Photoshop, or Fireworks if you can, then go from there. You will need something like that because of the layer based system you will be using in your creations. Then the background or bottom layer will need be transparent, and on export of your image, there is usually an option to have the background transparent, as I know Photoshop has one on the "save to Web" function, but on Fireworks, not so sure. Hope that gives you an insight.

Also, there are tons of tutorials out there on the net, google has loads : Linkies

thanks again

edit edit: i'm gonna try and download a newer version of photoshop mine is only 5 lol, then i'll try again

lol. yes please try to get a version that supports the PNG save to web function w/ transparency an option to enable or disable.

As long as the background in your composition is nonexistent, then it *should* just show up as transparent, but then again, i can't remember too well how version 5 operated. Also, you won't need to flatten layers to export

yeah as i only have the save as option i need to flatten the image or it wil only let me save it as a .psd, and flatteneing the layers automatically fills in the background white

on downloading a newer version of photoshop, which is the best/newest one to get
photoshop cs 2 or photoshop 8
edit: downloading cs2 now

CS2 if your computer can handle it but CS would be fine for what you want to do.
