Hope this is in the right place... I seem to have a habit of posting in the wrong topic.

Does anyone know if someone like me is allowed to edit someone else's Konfabulator widgets?
I discovered by accident that if you rename a .widget file to a .zip, you get a vaild zip archive!
Yup, probably old news to you all.
When I was downloading wigets, IE would say that it is an archive. So I renamed the widget and, lo and behold, it was a working zip file.

I took the Recycle Bin widget (before klumziee asks, no, i did not rename it ), extracted the contents to a file, replaced the 128x128 png of the winxp recycle bin with the mac waste basket png that I got from the D/L section here.

Is that allowed?

sure is you could have also changed the code to tell it to use the mac trash can either way. You should do more experimenting with K its really a fun program. Take parts of different widgets and put them together then you will have something new.

What tools would I use to create widgets?
I only know how to modify them.

Konfabulator uses Javascript and XML, right?
So I guess I would have to increase my knowledge of both :rolleyes:
Are their any tools that make this easier?

Well for some people that are good enough notepad is all you need but I would be lost with out this editor http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm and its free.

I'm awfully sorry for being a COMPLETE idiot about this, but how would you specifically rename a Konfabulator widget? I have tried, but with no success. Again, I'm very sorry for being so clueless. Thanks for your help!

trashcan.widget could be changed to waste basket.widget then you would have 2 different widget both being able to run at the same time. Or trashcan.widget....trashcan2.widget etc..either way it has been renamed and will now have its own registry settings.

If what you want is to create a compressed file such as rar or zip, yes, you will need specific software for that. You can use WinZip, or WinRar to do that. Those two programs are not the only ones available, but many people including myself use it a lot and they are pretty good.
